An assessment by the UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) published in January 2024 concluded that AI will almost certainly increase the volume and heighten the impact of cyber attacks over the next two years by providing a 'capability uplift in reconnaissance and social engineering' that makes malicious threats more effective, efficient and hard to detect. Moving towards 2025 and beyond, the NCSC believes that the commoditisation of AI-enabled capabilities in criminal and commercial markets will also aid cyber crime and state actors in their endeavours, partly by helping them to analyse exfiltrated data fast and more effectively so it can be used to train AI models. Cyber security firm Sophos agrees, pointing out that the large language models (LLMs) such as OpenAI's ChatGPT, Google's Gemini and Meta's Llama 2 made possible by AI allow cyber criminals to create diverse and deceptive content which can easily trick people into divulging sensitive information on an unprecedented scale.
